Three Weeks for Dreamwidth begins today! Over on the community goodbyebird has posted a set of memes to give people some ideas for what to post about. This one is about icons; the ability to collect icons and use different ones for different posts or comments is something I love about Dreamwidth, and I think we should celebrate them :D So let's do this:

DVD commentary meme

A little while ago sanguinity was posting about the old fandom tradition of fic writers doing 'DVD commentaries' for fics—i.e. a commentary about the process of writing the fic, the thought behind particular lines or writing choices, the research done, etc. etc.—and how people don't do them often these days. And I remembered enjoying DVD commentaries in the past and thought, that sounds fun, I'd like to take part in reviving this thing!

So here we go, and I'm making it a meme: choose one of my fics—not the FotH, TWN or Flemington ones or any podfic, please, but anything else is fair game; that link is filtered accordingly—and I will write you a DVD commentary on it.

And if you would like to do this with your own fics or other fanworks, you are encouraged to do so. :)

I'm finding this a fun game with other people's lists, so I decided to make my own!

The rules I used to make the list:

Memoirs, diaries and letter collections count, but not other non-fiction.
Maximum of three books per author, so the list isn't 41% Discworld.
Novellas and standalone short stories count. Plays count if I've read them as a book, not if I've only seen them on stage/as a film.

In choosing the books I've tried to strike a balance between 'I like this a lot', 'I think this is very good' and 'this has been a major influence on my tastes/values/opinions/id', and pick a range of things from different times of my life, though I think it's ended up biassed towards the last few years.

Observations:

I'm gratified by how few books I had to add manually, but displeased that all the Hornungs were among them.

I do not have a second favourite Robert Louis Stevenson book! I've included a couple I like, but they rank a long way below Kidnapped in my mind. Eager to see whether this changes when I've read Treasure Island and/or re-read The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, which I decided I didn't remember well enough to include now.

Highly entertained by the editions of A Month in the Country and South Riding having the same cover image. I don't know exactly where that is but I'm pretty sure it's not the right part of Yorkshire for either of them.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

88 excluding as-yet-unrevealed collections, but some of those are podfic, so for the purposes of a fic writer meme, 82.

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

416,274 (again excluding unrevealed works). Over six-and-a-bit years, I don't think that's too bad.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

At the moment chiefly the Jacobite And/Or D. K. Broster Extended Universe fandoms; in the past Raffles and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, to which I still sometimes return; and a long string of one-off (or two-off) fandoms largely written for exchanges, mostly old books and traditional songs.
