Now that's a title from the Well of Loneliness genre of queer book titles...
Hee, very true—although it is also comparing queer people to Jesus! Once again Edward Prime-Stevenson would approve. (And the book very much sees conscientious objectors as the righteous suffering the contempt of the evil world—there's a lot about how supporters of the war have twisted religious teachings for their own ends).
Does Dennis break off his courtship before Antoinette's feelings change? Wondering if Antoinette's true type is "unattainable person who does not love me back.
Dennis breaks things off just after Antoinette's feelings change—which possibly happens because she recognises the genuineness in him when he's realised that he can't go on with the deception/acknowledged his feelings for Alan. I think that's quite possible!
