I noticed that it seemed to be a cousin of The Streets of Laredo - these similarities and variations among folksongs are something I really enjoy - so I went to look it up, tumbled down a clickhole, and found myself reading all about the "Unfortunate Rake" trope and its many descendants. Too much fun!
