Oh yes, those phrases like 'do not you' or 'is it not' are very distinctive. (Although just because authors weren't using contractions in writing doesn't necessarily mean that people weren't using them in everyday speech, of course!) I don't really think about how many contractions I use in my own writing, but I expect I'll pay more attention to it now!
