I can see why she was popular—her writing is both genuinely very good and really Victorian in a way that must have had wide appeal to contemporaries. Six to Sixteen sounds good (I'm looking at it on Project Gutenberg now, and the list of chapter titles is great fun)—I will have to get to that one as well!

Attitudes towards love between women is a fascinating subject—there's more about it in Passions Between Women, which I'm reading now and which really emphasises how complicated and often contradictory (different people's, and sometimes the same individuals') attitudes could be. Good point about romantic love and marriage, also.

No time for lesbianism if you're too busy playing hockey...
