Possibly! The title and setting reminded me for a bit of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which IIRC was definitely more what I'd think of as a cafe.

Anyway, definitely an author to try! I also have The Heart is a Lonely Hunter on my vague to-read list, and will get to that at some point.
