Also seconding frustration with the whole "character who swears to be an old maid subsequently marries" thing-- it's SUCH a common trope in those sort of novels and annoys me no end, especially the wink wink nudge nudge attitude that frequently comes with it. There need to be more books where spinsters can just be spinsters in peace :P
