Eleanor is twenty-one at the end, I think (Margery being sixteen, and she says there's five years difference between them), but in any case it was an annoying ending to a story about these sweet childhood/teenage friendships!
That's very true, however—the more annoyingly perfunctory these sudden romances are, the easier they are to ignore and enjoy the rest of the book :D
