I love that kind of quiet, descriptive book, and The Country of the Pointed Firs is a very good example of the genre. Yes, Joanna's story with all the people bringing her things was lovely.

I got the recommendation from theseatheseatheopensea, who also mentioned Deephaven and Selected Stories—I'll try that one next. Hmm, 'The White Heron' does not appear to be one of the selected stories in there, but I'll keep a look out for it too—that title certainly sounds promising. :D
