Yuletide plans

It's that time of the year already... :D

It feels a bit strange to be going into Yuletide while working on a longfic which—if I keep making steady progress on it—will probably continue to be in progress through the entire course of the exchange. I'll have to fit Yuletide writing in around it, and will probably end up writing less than the last couple of years as a result. On the other hand, maybe I'll get sick of the longfic after a couple of months and want a break! We'll see.

Anyway, onto the important business, which is that I'm planning to nominate Flight of the Heron. I think Worldbuilding will still be eligible under the new rules—the prophecy/presence of fate hopefully counts as enough of a fictional element—and I'll nominate it alongside Ewen and Keith. Undecided about the fourth character slot—Aunt Margaret? Lachlan?

...I should clarify that I'm planning to nominate Flight of the Heron, not any fandom name that includes GitN and TDM as well. I have a fairly strong preference for this; if anyone else has a strong preference in the other direction, talk to me and we'll work out a compromise, as I doubt it'll be allowed to have both separately.

As for my other nominations, I don't know! I might repeat my A Glass of Blessings nomination and request from last year. Then perhaps a ballad (which ballad???)—or perhaps another Broster book or another Jacobite-related canon. What is everyone else thinking of nominating? (any Broster books, ballads or other Jacobite-related canons? :D )

Yes, that's how it has been for me the last two years! I did end up posting two Yuletide stories both of those years, but they were all fairly short ones.

As for what to request, I haven't properly considered it yet! There's FotH, possibly Flemington, possibly The Wounded Name now that I have reread it, and possibly also Kidnapped. : ) Last year I spontaneously offered Jean and Darklis from Bonnie Dundee, when I saw them among the nominations, but then nobody actually requested the fandom. That might be interesting to nominate/request? But I’d have to reread the book to appreciate it fully…

Oh nice! I was planning on offering/requesting FotH so I'm glad to hear you're nominating it. I might nominate Imre and/or White Cockades, but not sure yet...

I just ran across Philomel Follows After, by Mabel Esther Allan, which appears to be, well, not quite fanfic of Broster, but sort of related. '[W]ritten when Mabel Esther Allan was fifteen and was her second full length novel. A girls’ school story with a setting inspired by D. K. Broster’s Jacobite trilogy, it shows her early passion for Scotland – or how she imagined Scotland to be – with its clans and tartans, Gaelic language, supernatural folk-lore and dramatic scenery. She later noted, “I seem to have been living in a peculiar world of my own.” '

I'm guessing it's probably terrible (though Allan became an accomplished author), but might be rather interesting to see.

Kudos to her for finishing two full-lengths novels by that age..! And I know that feeling of living in a peculiar world of one's own, so common to fandom-at-large.

I hope it'll be a nice change getting to write one or two short things totally separate from my long WIP!

Hee, you could do an all-Jacobites request with FotH, Flemington and Kidnapped—and Bonnie Dundee too, which is a great idea (and very much worth re-reading, surely!). And of course who knows what there'll be to happen across in this year's tagset and spontaneously decide to offer and/or request...

Hooray! And those are some good ideas—more Jacobite fandoms are always good, and Imre fic would be lovely. :)

Aww, it sounds like Allan had some good inspiration for her romantic imagination, in any case :D That sounds amazing, even if the actual book isn't very good—and I second hyarrowen's comment about the impressiveness of writing two full-length novels by fifteen!

I'm definitely nominating The Horla by Guy de Maupassant this year, haha. SOMEONE HAS TO WRITE ME filthy HORLA/NARRATOR. :D

I don't know if you saw this when looking up, but there are two versions of the story: one is told by someone who heard about that story (a classic move, isn't it), which is already good. But I prefer (not very surprisingly) the one where it's written as a diary by the narrator-- with a kind-of open ending. :3
