regshoe: A grey heron in flight over water (Heron)

Music rec for Ewen Cameron, and in general

[personal profile] theseatheseatheopensea has got me crying over the role of place and landscape and identity in The Flight of the Heron again, so here's the song I associate most closely with Ewen—and just a really lovely song in its own right. The last verse in particular I imagine describing Ewen's thoughts on his eventual return from France: my way is clear, and I know what I will do tomorrow...

(also, scrolling through Dougie MacLean's Spotify page I see that he has an album all about the Scots Quair trilogy, which seems like an excellent reason to re-read the first book and get onto the other two...)

Oh! Yay! I feel VALIDATED, because I actually thought about this song as I was reading the book. I am especially fond of the version recorded by Fish, because he is awesome and I love him! And I also really like Frankie Miller's interpretation, his voice is so great and heartfelt.

*cries forever about this horrible book*

I first heard it via Frankie Miller, and then by Fish. I love them both, but Dougie MacLean sings it in such a unique, poignant way. It's truly amazing, it Totally Gets the feeling of being homesick for a place you belong to.

And, because I happen to like a lot of Scottish artists, here's another song that popped into my head while reading this book. Maybe it's just me, but I feel it has serious Keith vibes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeJWBskVJRY

...I'm completely ruined by reading 18th century history--my immediate association is that Colonel James Grant was the commander of the Jacobite artillery unit in the '45. *facepalm*

Oh, that's a beautiful version of that song.

Like you, I was so struck on my reread with the part where Ewen is being taken away to Carlisle and says goodbye to the Highlands. He's like, I'll see Alison in heaven but not Loch na h-Iolaire! Aaaaaaaaah. *cries*

The singer even looks like Ewen, older version.
