I don't know anything about tree planting, so it was really interesting to read everything you say here. And I didn't realise that many people considered Giono's book non-fiction, and that he enjoyed and encouraged it. How disturbing!
I have heard several people mention the Sarah Caudwell books now. They sound excellent.
