I was delighted to see TWO Armadale fics in the Candy Hearts collection! They are both Allan/Ozias, both really good, and both—to judge by the kudos/comment lists—probably by people (or the same person?...) who haven't written for the fandom before, so yay for all that :D

I like Pedgift Junior and his relationship with Allan, and I love this story in which he saves the day! It's all very funny and cute, as well as being a neat canon divergence:

Pedgift's Remedy (6166 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Armadale - Wilkie Collins
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Main Allan Armadale/Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale
Characters: Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale, Main Allan Armadale, Augustus Pedgift
Additional Tags: Victorian, Swooning, POV Outsider, First Time, First Time Blow Jobs, Poison
Summary:

Mr Pedgift Jnr believed very much in securing happiness and contentment for all his clients. And Mr Pedgift Jnr had observed that what brought Mr Allan Armadale the most happiness and contentment was Ozias Midwinter. That neither of them had yet realised this was a state of affairs that Pedgift hope to gently apprise them of.

And this is a lovely post-canon established relationship fic; both I and Allan are very happy to see Ozias so happy:

Midsummer (1712 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Armadale - Wilkie Collins
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Main Allan Armadale/Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale
Characters: Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale, Main Allan Armadale
Additional Tags: Victorian, Outdoor Sex, Established Relationship, Treat
Summary:

It is Midsummer at Thorpe Ambrose, but Allan is much more interested in Midwinter.

I predictably didn't have the energy to sign up for [community profile] rarefemslashex, but I did nominate for it, and I'm very pleased to see a fic for the genderswapped version of the poem 'The Highwayman', which I nominated. This is a lovely, romantic first meeting fic about Bess and the highwaywoman:

First Meeting in the Moonlight (600 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Highwayman - Alfred Noyes
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bess/Highwayman (The Highwayman - Alfred Noyes)
Characters: Bess (The Highwayman - Alfred Noyes), Highwayman (The Highwayman - Alfred Noyes)
Additional Tags: Gen or Pre-Slash, Alternate Universe - Gender Changes, F!Highwayman, First Meetings, Triple Drabble, Drabble Sequence, POV Alternating
Summary:

On an isolated stretch of road, surrounded by pines and heather, an introduction is made.

I felt like my writing did not go brilliantly this year, so it's gratifying to go to my AO3 stats page and see that that's not entirely the case. I published twelve fics in 2024, and my total posted wordcount is 43,882—lower than the last few years, but really not that bad, especially considering the ~25k draft also finished but not posted.

And my total posted works count has passed 100. In fact it's currently 103 and was never (or at least never showed as) exactly 100, because number 100 was my Yuletide assignment and I then posted another two Yuletide fics which were all revealed as mine at the same time, but never mind, it's something to be pleased with! Here are the last few fics running up to that total, which I didn't share here at the time:

A few fics )

At the end of the year I also wrote a ficlet for one of my occasional Raffles Christmas cards, which I've just posted on AO3 now:

[community profile] raremaleslashex has revealed, and I have received this utterly lovely Armadale fic. I had high hopes from the 'Birds' tag, and it does not disappoint—with the ornithology and some really adorable shippiness, this is a lovely Allan/Ozias story and perfectly tailored to me. <3 I do not think the author is anyone I know, so I'm curious to find out their identity!

A call from the orchards (2384 words) by Anonymous

Fandom: Armadale - Wilkie Collins

Relationships: Main Allan Armadale/Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale

Another Armadale ficlet! These two are just so adorable, and by presenting the early part of their relationship largely from an outsider POV, canon gives a fic writer plenty of gaps to fill in...

A Violent Fancy (598 words) by regshoe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Armadale - Wilkie Collins
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Main Allan Armadale/Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale
Characters: Main Allan Armadale, Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale
Additional Tags: Pre-Relationship
Summary:

‘That trifling particular had set Mr. Armadale’s face all of a flame; he had shouted and sworn; he had rushed into the stables; and forced the hostler to saddle him a horse, and had set off full gallop on the road that Ozias Midwinter had taken before him.’

I have liked Armadale (1866) very much ever since I first read it a few years ago. It's an amazing sensation novel, with a complicated and exciting plot and a fascinating villain, and also it contains one of the cutest slash pairings in nineteenth-century literature. Recently I was encouraged to re-read it, and this has been an excellent decision.

Speed, bonny boat, like a bird on the wing... )

ETA: I post about this book on Dreamwidth, and the very next day [tumblr.com profile] chiropteracupola has started reading it and drawn fanart! I am delighted—look at them all cute there :D
regshoe: Redwing, a brown bird with a red wing patch, perched in a tree (Default)
Today I finished a re-read of Armadale by Wilkie Collins, an amazingly exciting, dramatic and slashy Victorian sensation novel which I have loved for some time and which it's been great to see getting some more fannish attention lately. The slashy possibilities of this book greatly deserve to be explored further! I will write up a longer review presently, but for now, have a silly ficlet that I wrote a while ago and cleaned up today:

The Brink of a New Life (773 words) by regshoe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Armadale - Wilkie Collins
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Main Allan Armadale/Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale
Characters: Main Allan Armadale, Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Accidental Baby Acquisition
Summary:

There is a new arrival at Thorpe-Ambrose, and an important decision to be made.

I love the AO3 character tags for this fandom. I hope people write lots of fic about Original Allan Armadale, Allan Wrentmore | Allan Armadale and Fergus Ingleby | Allan Armadale, so it can get even more confusing.
regshoe: A grey heron in flight over water (Heron)
I had great fun writing some stories for [community profile] threesentenceficathon a few weeks ago. After the first few days of the ficathon I ran out of steam and got distracted by other stuff, but I'm pleased to have done these—it's definitely a good challenge trying to tell a story in three sentences.

Sunrise at Bretton (139 words) by regshoe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Vinculus
Additional Tags: Backstory, 3 Sentence Ficathon
Summary:

Vinculus contemplates his destiny.

And know not now what name to call myself (134 words) by regshoe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Armadale - Wilkie Collins
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Main Allan Armadale/Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale
Characters: Ozias Midwinter | Allan Armadale, Main Allan Armadale
Additional Tags: 3 Sentence Ficathon, Post-Canon
Summary:

On the meaning of Ozias's names.

(I am totally writing more Armadale fic, by the way—these two are the actual cutest and the book is amazingly good fun, and it deserves to have way more slash fic than exists so far).

On the White Sand (110 words) by regshoe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Flight of the Heron - D. K. Broster
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Ewen Cameron, Keith Windham
