Fic: 'Not through words, but the first ray of dawn' (Étoile)

I have a new obsession! And it's a bit of a surprise, because new American (/half-American) comedy in a modern setting is really not my usual kind of thing, but here we are. Étoile first caught my attention via a link to this gifset [er, big spoiler], then after clicking around a bit, finding some stuff about Cheyenne and deciding I had to know more about who she was, I decided to give the show a try. There is definitely some stuff about it that doesn't work for me, but the bits that do work really work, and on the whole it's loads of fun. Tobias and Cheyenne are, as I thought, among the highlights of the bits that work for me, but less expectedly, Geneviève has become my fave, and after watching the excellent finale I was inspired to write a little thing about her. I don't exactly know what I'm doing—live-action fandoms are not easy for me, especially one as fast-paced as this—and I'm not sure how far the ideas in this fic are really sound, but for now:

I am beginning a slow re-watch of the show and would like to write some more stuff for it in future, so we'll see how that goes, I suppose. In the meantime reading all the Tobias/Gabin fic (there's huge amounts of it, by my standards) is being fun too!

Oh, I look forward to reading this! I enjoyed the show a lot, as much as I have quibbles with it, and I am very sad there won't be more. Genevieve is super underrated!

She is! I was not surprised to see that most of the fic is Tobias/Gabin, but I was a bit surprised that most of the rest is Jack/Cheyenne—although I love their dynamic, I think Geneviève deserves lots of fic too. I liked your Tobias & Cheyenne fic, by the way—do you think you'll write any more for the fandom? :)

(As for the cancellation, I feel sorry for the creators who clearly want to make more, but from a fannish point of view I'm frankly a bit relieved. Open canons are stressful!)

I like Tobias/Gabin fine, but I just don't really care about romantic relationships on this show? I'm here for the individual characters and all the ways they interact! So if I do write fic, it will be more genfic. I'm glad you liked the one I wrote! I don't feel the need to write more right now but who knows?

I'm disappointed because I wanted to spend more time with all these characters! I think they're fun! I want to know about Nicholas's young hijinks! I want more info about Genevieve and her sister! I want to see Mishi blossom under Bruna's wing! And of course I want more Cheyenne and Tobias being geniuses at each other!

It's great so far. Cheyenne is amazing, ad we've enjoyed Luke Kirby in a bunch of other things, so it's good to see his face (and acting tics, lol). I didn't realise till we started watching that it was an Amy Sherman-Palladino show -- as my partner put it, "Bunheads, the sequel." :D

I've heard of some of Amy Sherman-Palladino's shows, but not Bunheads, and I don't think I've seen any of the actors in anything else before, so it's mostly new to me. I do like Luke Kirby as Jack especially—his mannerisms are so funny :D And Cheyenne is great!

I love Tobias/Gabin, but I also like the ensemble structure and the variety of different kinds of relationships there are to play with—Tobias and Cheyenne, Mishi and Bruna, Jack and Nicholas, etc. etc... I also want more of all those things, and I think it'll be a good one to nominate for Yuletide with loads of characters :D

Congratulations on finding a new fandom that you want to write for! : )

It's so different writing for canons that are not text, because you can't use the text of canon to calibrate/inspire the style of your fic.

Yeah, it's difficult to figure out a narrative voice that works. And comparing between spoken words and written text to get the character voices right can be tricky, too.
