About the prologue setting up the ending—my favourite thing is the foreshadowing of the bloody dirk ('"It is blood! ... No, I am wrong; it was only the early sun on the steel."' / 'The reddened dirk which a year ago he had been moved to fling into the loch...'). That broke my heart when I read the prologue for the second time and realised what was happening!
