I don't know whether it is grid or not, but your comments pushed me to do a bit more poking at the relevant elements, and I've realised I can move the panels closer together simply by setting the width of the 'wrapper' div to 'slightly wider than 3x the panel width', working around whatever's going on with margins and positioning. Thank you! :D
