I know, right! I always feel like historical novels often say as much about the time when they were written as the time they're set in (which can be interesting in itself, especially when it's an older work so you get two layers of history to unpack—but yeah, I don't read many recent historical books either), but JSMN is an exception to that—it's remarkably timeless. That narration certainly is an amazing achievement.
