Collage Journaling: Alice

Not my best work. I've done several Alice in Wonderland-themed collages which are much better than this. But my brain is not my friend at the moment, and I have filled up the last of my three inserts I was using for collage so I will be using my Agatha Christie notebook and my art notebook going forward. Both are smaller but I think that might be a good thing.

Is it OK to read Infinite Jest in public? Why the internet hates ‘performative reading’

You know, I was completely unaware that 'The Internet' hated upon this (whatever it is) until I came across this article and I think we are probably well into a realm similar to journo constructing a phenomenon on the basis of '6 people I spoke to in the wine-bar last week'.

Or maybe I just don't do TikTok and am missing this, but in my experience, few forms of social media are entire monoliths, what?

Why shouldn't people read in public? They're not doing it AT other people, honestly.

Can't help thinking that those who get aerated at people reading on public transport or while sitting quietly in a restaurant or coffee-shop are very likely those who think you should 'rawdog' long planeflights, sad gits.

Okay, these days I am pretty much always reading on ereader when out and about, so nobody can see what I'm reading. But back in the day I have read a lot of things that I daresay some miserable so-and-so would have considered 'performative', like Remembrance of Things Past on the Tube.

And among other things Marx and Rousseau on the train when I was commuting in from suburban Surrey.

Which phase of my life I was reminded of by a review headed 'A darker side of Lawrence Durrell' - I was not aware that there was any other side, actually - I habitually got in the same compartment of the same train each morning and there was the same young man making his way veeeeery slowwwwly through the volumes of The Alexandria Quartet. Months and months of Balthazar.

All of my ghosts are my home

On the normality front, our street is full of cracks and bangs and whooshes from fireworks set off around the neighborhood, none so far combustibly. Otherwise I spent this Fourth of July with my husbands and my parents and eleven leaves of milkweed on which the monarch seen fluttering around the yard this afternoon had left her progeny. My hair still smells like grill smoke. Due to the size of one of the hamburgers, I folded it over into a double-decker with cheese and avocado and chipotle mayo and regret nothing about the hipster Dagwood sandwich. A quantity of peach pie and strawberries and cream were highlights of the dessert after a walk into the Great Meadows where the black water had risen under the boardwalk and the water lilies were growing in profusion from the last, droughtier time we had passed that way. I do not know the species of bird that has built a nest in the rhododendron beside the summer kitchen, but the three eggs in it are dye-blue.

On the non-normality front, I meant it about the spite: watching my country stripped for parts for the cruelty of it, half remixed atrocities, half sprint into dystopia, however complicated the American definition has always been, right now it still means my family of queers and rootless cosmopolitans and as most of the holidays we observe assert, we are still here. It's peculiar. I was not raised to think of my nationality as an important part of myself so much as an accident of history, much like the chain of immigrations and migrations that led to my birth in Boston. I was raised to carry home with me, not locate it in geography. I've been asked my whole life where I really come from. This administration in both its nameless rounds has managed to make me territorial about my country beyond the mechanisms of its democracy whose guardrails turned out to be such movable goalposts. It enrages me to be expected not to care that I have seen the pendulum swing like a wrecking ball in my lifetime, as if the trajectory were so inevitable that it absolves the avarice to do harm or the cowardice to prevent it. It is nothing to do with statues. The door to the stranger is supposed to be open.

The wet meadows of the Great Meadows are peatlands. They were cut for fuel in the nineteenth century, the surrealism of fossil fuels: twelve thousand years after the glaciers, ashes in a night. The color of their smoke filled the air sixteen years ago when some of the dryer acres burned. If you ask me, there's room for bog bodies.

What I read

Finished The Islands of Sorrow and it is a bit slight, definitely one for the Simon Raven completist I would say - a number of the tales feel like outtakes from the later novels.

Decided not for me: Someone You Can Build a Nest In.

Started Val McDermid, The Grave Tattoo (2006), a non-series mystery. Alas, I was not grabbed - in terms of present-day people encounter Historical Mystery, this did not ping my buttons - a) could not quite believe that a woman studying at a somewhat grotty-sounding post-92 uni in an unglam part of London would have even considered doing a PhD on Wordsworth (do people anywhere even do this anymore) let alone be publishing a book on him b)a histmyst involving Daffodil Boy and a not so much entirely lost but *concealed unpublished in The Archives* manuscript of Epic Poem, cannot be doing with. (Suspect foul libel upon generations of archivists at Dove Cottage, just saying.) Gave up.

Read in anticipation of book group next week, Anthony Powell, The Kindly Ones (1962).

Margery Sharp, Britannia Mews (1946) (query, was there around then a subgenre of books doing Victoria to now via single person or family?). Not a top Sharp, and I am not sure whether she is doing an early instance of Ace Representation, or just a Stunning Example of Victorian Womanhood (who is, credit is due, no mimsy).

Because I discovered it was Quite A Long Time since I had last read it, Helen Wright, A Matter of Oaths (1988).

Also finished first book for essay review, v good.

Finally came down to a price I consider eligible, JD Robb, Bonded in Death (In Death #60) (2025). (We think there were points where she could have done with a Brit-picker.)

On the go

Barbara Hambly, Murder in the Trembling Lands (Benjamin January #21) (2025). (Am now earwormed by 'The Battle of New Orleans' which was in the pop charts in my youth.)

Up next

Very probably, Zen Cho, Behind Frenemy Lines, which I had forgotten was just about due.

***

O Peter Bradshaw, nevairr evairr change:

David Cronenberg’s new film is a contorted sphinx without a secret, an eroticised necrophiliac meditation on grief, longing and loss that returns this director to his now very familiar Ballardian fetishes.

You can request 3-10 fandoms and offer 4-10 fandoms with 1-20 ships and 1-3 media (fic and/or art and/or podfic) in each.

  • You are only guaranteed to match on one fandom/ship/medium.
  • You can only request fandoms and relationships that have been nominated and appear in the tagset.
  • You can request a fandom more than once (if you want to request more than 20 ships, or you want to request a particular medium for some ships and not others). However, you must still request at least 3 unique fandoms.
  • You cannot offer a fandom more than once.
  • Only reasonable Do Not Wants (DNWs) listed in your signup will be enforced.
  • Do not list "unrequested kinks" as a DNW as this frequently causes confusion. Please be specific to avoid disappointment.
  • Do not indicate that you prefer one of your requests over the others; do not rank requests in order of preference. Your gift creator is only guaranteed to know one of your fandoms.
  • If you request or offer Original Work: matching does not differentiate between this and other fandoms; it is not to be considered a "backup" and you might match on it even if your other fandoms have requests/offers.

Because Hanscom hasn't held an air show in years, I have no idea what the hell passed over my parents' yard behind the unrelieved overcast except that it sounded like a heavy bomber, but not a modern one: an air-shaking piston-engined roar like who ordered the Flying Fortress, which were not to my knowledge even tested at the base. It suggested lost psychogeography and worried me.

Japanese Breakfast's "Picture Window" (2025) came around again on WERS as I was driving this afternoon. The line about ghosts and home keeps resonating beyond the pedal steel guitar.

I see we will be celebrating the Fourth of July out of spite this year. So go other holidays. Af tselokhes, John.

I read other things after the dark academia! Though honestly the second book took me two weeks and I finished it up just yesterday; let us forgive this slight accounting error and treat it as June. In July I’m planning to try Emily Tesh’s The Incandescent and one of my bookstore backlog items, but as always, we’ll see what turns up. Hope you’re staying cool and enjoying some fresh produce. My red currant bush was so productive in its first fruiting year and I’m delighted.

Cakes and Ale, W. Somerset Maugham

Maugham’s Wikipedia page contains an involved discussion of his literary mediocrity, detailing criticisms of his output both contemporary and retrospective. Particular attention goes towards his supposed lack of brilliance and beauty, despite the clever correctness of his prose and storytelling. I would have understood that, perhaps agreed with it, until I reached the final chapter of Cakes and Ale.

This is a classic sort of navel-gazing novel in which an author writes a fictionalized sketch of things known from life. Willie Ashenden (not the spy novel protagonist; Maugham reuses his name here) narrates in the first person as he navigates a present-day friend’s attempt to write a post-mortem biography of a dead Great Author. The friend, Alroy Kear, knew the Great Author, Edward Driffield, later in Driffield’s life. He wants Ashenden’s youthful recollections of the author before he was great, when they were acquaintances in the same small village. Ashenden reminisces about his life and knowledge of Driffield.

    Lord Dismiss Us, Michael Campbell

Terence P. Carleton is a senior prefect at the Weatherhill School starting his final summer term. He’s already sat his exams and will be headed to Oxford in autumn. A new Head of school, Crabtree, and his wife and teen daughter are beginning at Weatherhill following the prior Head’s death. Existing masters, like the old Dr. Rowland and young Cambridge scholar Eric Ashley, must adjust to the new Head’s regime; a wide cast of secondary characters includes the school reverend Cyril Starr and a pretty, new boy named Nicky Allen.

This 1960s portrait of British public schools was written to be contemporary and critical, for the discerning adult reader. It’s blurbed by Christopher Isherwood. Campbell set out to write a fictional treatise on homosexuality in schools, and he covers his subject to an amazing extent. Crabtree wants to root out this “muck” and will extract blood by the end of term. Dr. Rowland is the repressed older teacher; he initially turns a blind eye towards sex and romance among the boys, but is swayed towards Crabtree. Ashley is the wild young instructor still reeling from his own boyhood romance, driven to ever-more instability by the eradication crusade. Reverend Cyril Starr might not desire fleshly things, but he does collect a stable of his favorite type of boy. And the boys, well—Carleton falls for Allen and is absurd in his ascetic attempt to keep that love pure, i.e. nonsexual. Most other named boys in the book are fucking someone. The ones who aren’t become arms of Crabtree’s crusade. It’s a messy, homosocial, homosexual world in which women and girls are foreigners or enemeis, but the greatest enemy of all remains the patriarchal definition of acceptable masculinity.

And for [personal profile] regshoe, this exchange:

Ashley: ‘Do you know E. M. Forster’s “The Longest Journey”?’
    Carleton: ‘Yes, it’s very difficult.’
Ashley: ‘It’s the most interesting of them all.”

As always on my birthday, I am having my annual birthday sale. This year, since I’m planning to raise prices post-sale ($3.99 for a novella, $5.99 for a novel), I decided to put everything on sale for one big final blow-out. So currently all my novellas are $0.99, and all my novels are $2.99.

Do you like Cold War spies falling in love on an American road trip, even though they're from opposite sides of the Iron Curtain? Then give Honeytrap a try!

If a Civil War soldier woke up from an enchanted sleep in 1965, how long would it take for him to cotton on that men are no longer allowed to touch? Find out in The Sleeping Soldier!

Are you interested in an m/m World War II retelling of Beauty and the Beast? Then Briarley may be for you!

How about a couple of boys riding the rails and falling in love during the Great Depression? Tramps and Vagabonds has your back.

Do you like watching post-World War I woobies suffer beautifully by the seaside? The Larks Still Bravely Singing may be warbling your name.

More Cold War spies, but this time CHRISTMAS! Deck the Halls with Secret Agents is a holly jolly short return to a favorite theme.

Do you like throuples and World War II and retellings of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight? Then A Garter as a Lesser Gift may be coming to a Green Chapel near you.

Do you like throuples and pining and strawberry shortcake in post-Civil War America? Then give The Threefold Tie a try.

Do you want Cold War spies (again!), but this time they're the leads in the fandom that our two heroines are obsessed with? And kind of role-play as while trying out the joys of "your interpretation of this character is so incorrect" hatesex? Enemies to Lovers is calling your name.

You know it is when there's this new girl in school that you're sooo obsessed with because you both love art, and then you have an obsessive friendship ending in a terrible falling out, and then meet again years later in Florence? Have a gelato with Ashlin and Olivia.

And finally, a couple of oddballs. A retelling of Little Red Riding Hood in pre-Revolutionary Russia! Kind of f/f if you want to be! The Wolf and the Girl features forays both into the Russian forest and the nascent French silent film industry.

Last but not least, if your inner eleven-year-old yearns for a magical timeslip story, there's The Time Traveling Popcorn Ball

Well, in further conferencing misadventures, woke up around 5 am with what I came to realise was a crashing migraine - it is so long since I have had one of these as opposed to 'headache from lying orkard' - took medication, and after some little while must have gone to sleep, because I woke up to discover it was nearly 9.30, and I had slept well past the alarm I had set in anticipation of the 9.00 first conference session. But feeling a lot better.

I was only just in time to grab some breakfast before they started clearing it up.

The day's papers were perhaps a bit less geared towards my own specific interests - and I was sorry to miss the ones I did - but still that there Dr [personal profile] oursin managed the occasional intervention. There were also some good conversations had.

So the conference, as a conference, was generally judged a success, if somewhat exhausting.

I managed to get the train from the University to Birmingham New Street with no great difficulty.

However, the train I was booked on was somewhat delayed (though not greatly, not cancelled, and no issues of taking buses as in various announcements) and I initially positioned myself at the wrong bit of the platform and had to scurry along through densely packed waiting passengers.

Journey okay, with free snacks, though onboard wifi somewhat recalcitrant.

At Euston, the taxi rank was closed!!!!

Fortunately one can usually grab a cab in the Euston Road very expeditious, and I did.

So I am now home and more or less unpacked.

Given that Mercury is, I recollect, the deity of travellers, is Mercury in retrograde?
