regshoe: Black silhouette of a raven in flight, wearing a Santa hat (santa hat)

It's been a busy couple of days, but I've had a great time this last week reading through the Yuletide collection—there is some really good stuff there :D I shall reiterate the recs of my own gifts, and here are some more things I recommend...

It's been a good year for D. K. Broster fandom... As well as my own gift for Flight of the Heron, there is this fic, a lovely post-fix-it Ewen/Keith story with some absolutely gorgeous landscape and nature descriptions and excellent birds—I love the heron POV especially.

Hereafter (3186 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Jacobite Trilogy | The Flight of the Heron Series - D. K. Broster
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Ewen Cameron/Keith Windham
Characters: Ewen Cameron, Keith Windham
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Romance, Nature, Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies
Summary:

Time passes, and the heron brings life.

And there is also The Wounded Name fic! This brilliant story takes place in an AU with m/m marriage, and shows Aymar's POV on a version of the canon plot in which he and Laurent end up getting married. The OTT emotions of love and honour are truly worthy of the canon :D

Whose Hand Was Thine in Earnest (8978 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Wounded Name - D. K. Broster
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Laurent de Courtomer/Aymar de la Rocheterie
Characters: Aymar de la Rocheterie, Laurent de Courtomer
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Same-Sex Marriage, Honor, Angst with a Happy Ending, 19th Century, Napoleonic Wars
Summary:

Aymar de la Rocheterie, having taken his leave of the de Courtomers, found himself smiling as he sat in the coach on his continued journey to Bath. He would not for the world have embarrassed the young man by making any such intimation, but what a sheltered life this Laurent de Courtomer must have led! As the son of an aristocratic emigré, his heart and his loyalty were in the right place, but he had never taken up arms for his King; never been wounded or risked his life in the cause; never spent a night dripping wet in a Breton wood, waiting for the dawn and the ambush of a revolutionary troop.

(I only leave out the other The Wounded Name fic because I don't like the ship and have therefore not read it; but I hear from people who do and have that it's very good, so have a link anyway :D )

The other Jill fic, besides my gifts, is also fantastic—it's the perfect post-canon Jill/Kitty story, exploring how their lives develop over the next few years and clearing up the loose ends of their relationship in a very satisfying way, with excellent canon voice:

To Meet Again As Equals (8527 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jill - E. A. Dillwyn
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Kitty Mervyn/Gilbertina Trecastle
Characters: Kitty Mervyn, Gilbertina Trecastle
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, 19th Century, Don't Have to Know Canon, Identity Reveal, Romance
Summary:

I take up the writing of my narrative again at the age of thirty, at the urging of a certain person who has by now read the first two volumes, and indicated an interest in seeing how I would sketch out the years that lay between the ending of my last book and my present time of life. But first, a caveat: this volume, unlike the preceding two, is not meant for public perusal, but only for private reflection and gratification.

The Worldbuilding tag continues to bring excellent things for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell fandom. There are six fics in the collection and all are thoroughly worth reading, but these two were my favourites... This one is a beautifully creative take on English magic before John Uskglass, women magicians and in-universe magical history:

The Lost Works of the Dry-Cræfticen of Wherwell: a New Approach (1450 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Additional Tags: Worldbuilding, Magical Realism, Pseudo-History, Academia, Archaeology
Summary:

An article from the book Female Magicians in Pre-Aureate England, published in 2006 by York University Press.

And this one is a seriously quality crack fic in which the presenters of Gardener's World accidentally summon the gentleman with the thistledown hair:

Thistledown (1568 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Gardeners' World, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke

Additional Tags: Horticulture, Crack, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Hello and welcome to Gardeners' World. Today we'll be taking a closer look at some thistledown hair.

I was delighted to see a fic for Imre in the collection—it's really getting a fandom now :D And the fic itself is very, very good—written with beautiful canon voice, it develops Imre and Oswald's relationship further from the end of the book by way of some excellent hurt/comfort:

Imre: An Addendum (8517 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Imre: A Memorandum - Edward Prime-Stevenson
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Imre von N. (Imre)/Oswald (Imre)
Characters: Imre von N. (Imre), Oswald (Imre), Original Characters
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Internalized Homophobia, Fever, Post-Canon
Summary:

Imre returns from a training exercise with the army, but all is not well.

A short sequel to Imre: A Memorandum

Worrals was another fandom I was very happy to see! This fic combines a brilliant canon pastiche—a fast-paced, twisty, thrilling adventure plot exactly like the kind of thing Johns writes—with Worrals/Frecks femslash. Both aspects are great and the whole thing is incredibly good fun:

Sky High! or, Worrals Gets the Girl (13170 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 5/5
Fandom: Worrals Series - W. E. Johns
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Joan "Worrals" Worralson/Betty "Frecks" Lovell
Characters: Joan "Worrals" Worralson, Betty "Frecks" Lovell, Bill Ashton
Additional Tags: Action/Adventure, World War II, British Homefront
Summary:

Worrals and Frecks go on leave. An entire week of vacation in the country; what could possibly go wrong? Never mind the rumours among the girls working at the munitions factory, and the mysterious crates labeled in German, and the unknown aircraft landing in the dark...

This fic for A Little Princess takes an intriguing premise and really makes the most of it—exploring Becky's character and developing the issues of class raised by canon, alongside some lovely Becky&Sara friendship, all written in beautiful style:

Magic Casements (5699 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: A Little Princess - Frances Hodgson Burnett
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Becky (A Little Princess), Sara Crewe, Ram Dass, Tom Carrisford, Maria Minchin
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Role Reversal, Class Issues
Summary:

Becky is the one who rescues Mr Carrisford's monkey, and so the one whom the Magic happens to instead.

And finally, this Monty Python's Flying Circus fic is a sketch-crossover exploring what happens when Dennis Moore the highwayman tries to rob the Cheese Shop. Excellent silliness :D

Certainly Not Lacking in Cheese (1311 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Monty Python's Flying Circus
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Dennis Moore, Henry Wensleydale
Additional Tags: Cheese, Cheese Shops, Highwaymen, No parrots, No lupins either
Summary:

Poor Henry Wensleydale, stuck in his cheese shop all the live long day. If only a dashing highwayman would come and liven things up!

Earlier today, I had a quick look at the Imre fic and decided that it couldn't have been written by you, since it had pretty much no ellipses, uneven length or not. : D

I am curious to see what you wrote this year!
