regshoe: Close-up of a grey heron, its beak open as if laughing (Heron 2)
[personal profile] regshoe
I think [personal profile] hyarrowen's 'The Lady of the Loch' is one of the most delightful stories in the fandom, so it was a natural choice for what to record next :D It's been a nice challenge—a bit longer than anything I'd attempted before, and with some more dramatic dialogue and action—but mostly just a lot of fun.

And a few fic recs!

I have loved E. M. Forster's The Longest Journey in all its weird gloomy complexity for years, and now [personal profile] phantomtomato has written the Rickie Elliot/Stewart Ansell fic I always wanted <3 Taking a canon scene that really called for some kissing and adding the kissing, it's a beautiful story, develops the characters and the book's ideas in a really interesting way, and gives these two the warm happiness they were never going to get from this particular canon. Highly, highly recommended.

And [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange, the exchange for epistolary fic, revealed this week with two Flight of the Heron stories in the collection! Authors are still anonymous but, er, I suspect I know who they both are :P The fics are both amazing, both make really creative use of the epistolary format, and they form a lovely complement to each other. This one is canon-compliant and beautifully angsty, using Ewen's correspondence with the real Jacobite historian Robert Forbes to explore his grief over Keith's death; it's a very good bit of understated, significant sadness as well as a brilliant historical pastiche:

Summary:

To Ewen Cameron of Ardroy

Dear Sir, I have not the Honour of being known to you, & you will no doubt wonder at a Stranger writing to you without an Introduction, but I must hope that you will excuse the Liberty when I have explain'd my Purpose.

And this one is a happy Ewen/Keith AU, in which Keith and Ewen, parted by circumstances, write amazingly romantic letters to each other using an ingenious code. It's very clever, deeply warm-hearted in mood and generally a beautiful epistolary shipfic:

Comfort Me With Apples (1676 words) by Anonymous

On the eve of war, Keith and Ewen devise a code to keep their letters private.

...and between those two and my podfic, we have 100 works in the FotH tag! Well done, fandom \o/
