The National Theatre of Scotland may not be quick at responding to emails, but they are very friendly and helpful when they do. As for the question I asked, there is bad news and good news...

The bad news is that there are no plans to make a filmed performance of Kidnapped generally available for streaming or purchase.

The good news is that such a recording does exist, and will be added to the NTS's Education Portal. This provides recordings of plays for educational use; it's aimed at teachers and pupils in schools and FE colleges, but I asked whether someone at a university in another country rather than a school/FE college in the UK would be eligible to sign up, and was told this would be OK (although an unfamiliar email address might require manual approval, which would take about a week). The sign-up form is here.

So there you go! An option exists, and I hope this information is of some help.

Oh, that's great news! :o)

(Patrick Stewart icon because of theatre, not because of his pose ;op)

Oh, that's excellent news! Although sadly I no longer have any form of educational institution email address ;_; my mum works in a school kitchen, I wonder if she has one that would work... 🤔

Oooh, this is excellent news! \o/

Although I bet they will wonder why someone at a technical university would want access... *facepalm* But hey, I do also have an email address at the non-technical university which I could use, since the math department is a joint one.

Nice!

(I have sadly concluded that the National Theatre, not of Scotland, is never going to make commercially available the recorded versions of two productions which I saw and adored in 2010 and 2011, but I did appreciate that during one of the first rounds of quarantine in 2020, at least they put them up online.)

Good that they were up during lockdown, at least.

I could finally point other people toward them! I would still, however, like the option of paying money for DVDs. I understand the principle of theater disappearing when it's performed purely live, but knowing that there are recordings makes it additionally frustrating.

(The plays were Alan Bennett's The Habit of Art and John Hodge's Collaborators, otherwise known as how I learned to stop worrying and love Alex Jennings.)

I was able to sign up by clicking the option (on the advice of the National Theatre of Scotland) saying that I home-schooled.

Not that I do home-school, I hasten to add, but it gets round the affiliation to an educational institution requirement.

Sorry to burst in on your journal unannounced, but it seemed like this information might be relevant to your interests!
