The last verse in particular I imagine describing Ewen's thoughts on his eventual return from France: my way is clear, and I know what I will do tomorrow...

Oh! Yay! I feel VALIDATED, because I actually thought about this song as I was reading the book. I am especially fond of the version recorded by Fish, because he is awesome and I love him! And I also really like Frankie Miller's interpretation, his voice is so great and heartfelt.

Like you, I was so struck on my reread with the part where Ewen is being taken away to Carlisle and says goodbye to the Highlands. He's like, I'll see Alison in heaven but not Loch na h-Iolaire! Aaaaaaaaah. *cries*
