Yes—I think there is certainly value in 'appreciating it for what it is', but also in finding those common themes that both books have deep down. And, yes, the relationship between magic and place is a really interesting one in Piranesi.

Thanks for linking that interview! I'd not seen it, and there is some really interesting stuff in there (plus it's good to hear that she's doing better than she was!). That bit about the world in Piranesi being 'imbued with life', and the importance of Piranesi as a character recognising the world as having life and value of its own, is very important, and—thinking about it—one of the best things about the book. As well as something it has in common with JSMN, of course, though expressed in a rather different way!
