Historically, the Jacobites were going out of their way to be noble and gentlemanlike—observing the rules of parole as Ewen does with Keith, giving wounded Hanoverian prisoners as good medical care as their own wounded got—partly to demonstrate that they were legitimate wagers of war, fighting for the true and rightful king, and not savage barbarians, partly because being horrible to people whom Charles was trying to convince they were his subjects wouldn't have been a good policy.

Also, though Broster certainly does focus on the noble side of things, there is a bit more grim consequences of war later on in the book, if that's more your thing. I didn't quote 'Ye Jacobites By Name' for nothing...

Yeah, I think there were two herons, unless the one Lachlan killed magically came back to life. Which is possible, I suppose!
