Flight of the Heron timeline

This is a complete timeline for The Flight of the Heron, compiled from the various references to dates and times throughout the book. This was an easier task than for Raffles, as FotH is a single mostly-linear narrative, quite specifically placed in real history, and doesn't contradict itself, and Broster is usually fairly generous with giving precise dates and lengths of time for the events she narrates. In a few places I've arbitrarily decided on a specific date within the possible range given by canon, but there are no outright guesses. This follow-up post goes into detail on how I put the timeline together.
Note: All dates are given in Old Style, that is, according to the Julian calendar used in Scotland and England at the time the book takes place. These dates are 11 days behind those of the New Style or Gregorian calendar in use now—so, for example, 16 August 1745 would be 27 August in today's calendar.

Date: Feb. 7th, 2022 05:17 pm (UTC)And that's a very good point about the different calendars—I may add a note to the post clarifying that these are all Old Style dates. And you've cleared up a minor mystery for me—I was sure I'd read that New Year's Day was 25 March until the 1750s, but my Jacobite history books (which generally say something about Old and New Style dates) never mentioned it, and the contemporary writings I've seen always seemed to assume a January New Year. But if it was only England which had the 25 March New Year, not Scotland, then that makes perfect sense.
